โTimeless Sense of Style: A Cultural Hub That Connects
Haebangchonโs Past and Presentโ
Shinheung Market, located in Haebangchon, Itaewon, began to take on its unique atmosphere after 1953, following Koreaโs liberation, as people of various nationalities gathered and blended together.๐จ๐ปโ๐ฆฐ๐จโ๐ฆฑ๐ณ๐พโโ๏ธ๐๐ผโโ๏ธ
After the Korean War, the surrounding area which was once a haven for refugees, was transformed into a trendy hotspot where the past and present coexist, with unique shops and exotic restaurants now lining its streets.
In 2015, the area was designated an โUrban Regeneration Activation Areaโ by Seoul and has since undergone another transformation with a fresh new look.๐
Unlike a traditional Korean market, which typically has a straight layout from entrance to exit, Shinheung Market features a loop-shaped structure, with coffee shops and bars lining the alleyways. ๐ปโ
The market has an open ceiling in the center, allowing warm sunlight to shine through during the day and radiant LED lights to illuminate the alleys at night, creating a unique atmosphere. It feels almost like stepping into a European market. ๐ก
Benches are scattered throughout the alleys, providing shoppers with places to rest, while a terrace-like atmosphere and rooftop vibes can be enjoyed at every turn. This location has become especially popular with Millennials and Gen Zs after work, with many capturing sunset photos. You can often find young people soaking in the sunset and reveling in the atmosphere, highlighting that this is a rising hotspot.๐
The uphill road leading to Haebangchon Shinheung Market ends with a special moment just for you!๐

โก Shindang-dong Jungang Market
#Hipdang-dong #Shindang-dong #TteokbokkiAlley #Arcade #Art
"From a Seoul Rice Warehouse to the Heart of Hipdang-dong"
Once known as Seoulโs granary due to the many rice shops that once lined it, Shindang-dong Street is now referred to as "Hipdang-dong," thanks in large part to Shindang-dong Jungang Market!๐ฉโ๐พ๐
Located at Shindang Station on Lines 2 and 6, it offers excellent transportation accessibility. ๐๐
Recently, Shindang-dong has gained fame by word of mouth, with Millennials and Gen Zs calling the area โHipdang-dong.โ It is surrounded by many of Seoulโs prominent attractions such as Shindang-dong Tteokbokki Town, Chungmu Arts Center, DDP, and Cheonggyecheon, offering plenty of sights and activities for visitors to explore nearby.
Inside Jungang Market, you will see a passageway leading to an underground arcade. In collaboration with market vendors, the walls have been adorned with a variety of visual arts. Additionally, there are art studios and workshops scattered throughout the market, where young artists have established their creative spaces.๐จโ๐จ๐จ
The market is also filled with popular restaurants that office workers love to visit after work. It gained even more fame when the singer Sung Si-kyung, known in the entertainment industry for his extensive knowledge of food, filmed a YouTube video there.๐น
For example, Yipo Eomuk is well known for its handmade fish cakes. When dipped in soy sauce and wasabi, the chewy texture is sure to captivate your taste buds. Okgyeong-i-nae Dried Fish offers only wild-caught fish, which they catch and dry on a boat before they are delivered to Seoul. The grilled cuttlefish, a signature dish here, is especially popular. ๐
Last year, Seoulโs Jung-gu District selected Jungang Market as the site for the โ2023 Seoul Design Innovation Traditional Market Development Projectโ.
The aim of the project is to blend innovative designs with traditional markets, transforming them into popular tourist destinations. Expect exciting new developments to take place at this market as it undergoes this transformation!๐

โข Mangwon Market
#MangwonStationExit2 #Hongdae #FoodHeaven #Mangnidan-gil #Dakgangjeong
โA Food Heaven Brimming With Youthful Energyโ
If you turn right at Exit 2 of Mangwon Station on Line 6 and go straight, you will be greeted by the vibrant, colorful sculptures at the entrance of Mangwon Market.๐ข๐ด๐ก๐ต
Compared to other traditional markets, Mangwon Marketโs clean and modern interior has made it a popular spot for young people.
Located adjacent to the Hongdae and Hapjeong commercial areas, Mangnidan-gil has been shaped by young entrepreneurs. In step with the changes taking place in the area, it continues to attract a predominantly younger crowd.๐
The area is also well known as a food heaven, with most spots requiring a wait before you are seated. Wooyirak is renowned for its large fried peppers. The crunchy texture and generous filling of these peppers provide a hearty and satisfying experience. Mangwon Market is also lined with dakgangjeong (sweet and crispy fried chicken) shops, which is a signature dish of the market. You can enjoy a wide range of flavors, including sweet, spicy, honey soy, garlic soy, fruit, and cheese mustard.
You will also find eye-catching snacks like Mangwon croquettes and Bburinkle hotteok (Korean sweet pancakes), making it impossible to pass by without trying some. ๐ฉ
Recently, the number of overseas tourists visiting the area, particularly in Hongdae, has surged. Come and experience a food paradise that is captivating the world!๐คญ

โฃ Geumnam Market
#GeumhoStation #ILiveAlone #KoreanWar #Working-Class-Friendly #Foods
โWorking-Class Traditional Marketsโ
Geumnam Market, recently featured on the popular observational reality show I Live Alone, is one of Seoulโs foremost traditional markets.
Although the surrounding Geumho-dong area has changed with redevelopments and new apartment buildings, the market still retains the atmosphere and vibe of the mid- to late 90s.
Now a landmark of Geumho-dong, Geumnam Market has remained active since the Korean War. Unlike other markets that focus on specific goods or wholesale trading, Geumnam Market has, due to its isolated location, remained relatively unaffected by external influences, adopting a working-class-friendly image.
Thanks to this background, the market has served as a beloved site for the livelihoods of local residents and a key provider of daily essentials.๐
True to its reputation as a working-class-friendly market, Geumnam Market offers both affordable and hearty food. Among the must-try items is โgolmok naengmyeonโ (cold noodles) which, with their tangy, sweet, and spicy flavors, can readily refresh your taste buds on a hot summer day. ๐
Soseol-Og, a fusion restaurant that serves grilled black pork with wine, has recently become a rising hotspot in Geumnam Market, attracting young people who often have to line up to get in. These food offerings are infusing new vibrancy into this charming traditional market. ๐

โค Gyeongdong Market
#MedicinalHerbs #TraditionalMarket #SeoulYangnyeongsi #TraditionalKoreanMedicine #Retro #MillennialsGenZs #HotSpots
โFrom a Traditional Herb Market to a Retro Market that Appeals to All Generationsโ
Originally, Seoulโs Gyeongdong Market served as a hub for trading agricultural products between Gangwon-do and Gyeonggi-do Provinces. However, in the 1960s, it was transformed into a traditional market that sold food and traditional medicine ingredients.
It is the largest traditional market in Seoul in terms of area and the biggest traditional medicine market in the country, accounting for about 70% of the transactions taking place in Korea.
As you pass through the large, tiled gate marked โSeoul Yangnyeongsi,โ youโll be greeted by the healthy aroma of traditional medicines and ginseng.
With the rise in popularity of the Seoul K-Medi Center among younger generations, the area has increasingly attracted a youthful crowd. Today, it has become a popular retro-themed hotspot for Millennials and Gen Z, capitalizing on its traditional charm through numerous collaborations with corporate brands.
LG Electronicsโ Geumseong Radio Refresh Center, situated within Gyeongdong Market, has emerged as a unique retro-themed experience space. It features various interactive corners, including the Mind Refresh Corner, Refresh Corner, Individuality Refresh Corner, and the Heart Refresh Corner, offering a wide range of experiences that promote environmental protection by recycling waste materials. โป
Furthermore, Starbucks has remodeled a former movie theater and launched it as its โGyeongdong 1960โ branch, featuring a distinctive retro interior. This unique space has quickly become a popular tourist spot. Notably, last year, it held โRooftop Food Truck Night Market - Gyeongdong 1960โ on the rooftop of the new building, bringing retro vibes and making it a landmark of nostalgia.โ๐ฌ
Isnโt it amazing how a traditional market filled with traditional medicines and ginseng can be transformed into a retro-themed landmark that appeals to all generations through innovative new approaches?

Bangsan Market is currently a specialized market for the printing and packaging industries. However, it is also renowned as a unique destination for those interested in pastries and baking, offering a wide range of confectionery and baking ingredients, as well as disposable packaging materials.
Especially during special occasions like Valentineโs Day, Pepero Day, and Christmas, the market features a diverse range of products for confectionery and packaging. Visiting just before these holidays is a great way to experience its unique range of offerings. ๐๐ฅ๐ฅจ๐ฅฏ
Bangsan Market offers all the ingredients needed for baking, including supplies for cakes, cookies, and bread, as well as various flours, dairy products, chocolate ingredients, nuts, and more. This wide selection makes it a renowned destination among baking enthusiasts.
Previously, the market was frequented by wholesalers, as merchants mostly sold products in bulk. However, with the rise of single-person households, it now offers small quantities of individually packaged items, such as single-serving disposable containers, allowing shoppers to purchase a variety of baking tools.๐๐

A Word from the Seoul Tourism Organization!๐
The markets in Seoul are more than just venues for selling and buying goods; they are charming spaces where the past and present coexist.
For some, they are unique playgrounds; for others, they evoke memories or resemble museums.
Tongin Market, which you might already be familiar with,
is a favorite among marketgoers.
While Tongin Market offers a variety of foods and snacks,
the "oil tteokbokki" comes highly recommended.
Unlike the typical street food tteokbokki,
it has a crispy exterior and a soft, chewy interior.
A visit is sure to spark a craving,
so make sure to include Tongin Market in your tour plans!
